Fireplace Cleaning in Raleigh

Is your fireplace smoking?

Besides the dangerous buildup of creosote (discussed within the chimney page) one of the most common issues people have with their fireplace is that it smokes. Of course, all fireplaces create smoke but what we are talking about here is that the smoke enters your home instead of exiting completely through the chimney.

There are many reasons why a smoking fireplace occurs:

The Damper – a damper prevents heat from escaping when the fireplace is not in use. If it is malfunctioning then it can restrict smoke from exiting the chimney.

Creosote Cleaning – If your chimney is not cleaned regularly then creosote will build up and restrict air flow. This substance is a nuisance and a danger as creosote buildup is the leading cause of chimney fires.

The Chimney Liner – if you find the strong smell of smoke in other rooms of the home besides the one containing the fireplace, then it could be a problem with your chimney liner. If there is a crack in the chimney liner or a break in the liner if it leads to an adjacent flue, then smoke will escape through it. This is a serious hazard which should be dealt with immediately.

Chimney Cap – Occasionally chimney caps are too short for the chimney which they protect. This usually happens because the installer did not take into account that the liner is higher than the chimney crown, leaving only a small space for smoke to exit. Alternatively, there could be an obstruction stopping the smoke from exiting.
